I am thinking KDE Neon is a horrible choice to run under a virtual machine.
8gb ram is not really ideal. I am trying to find my ideal distribution. It feels like dating.

I've moved from Ubuntu to Arch at home. I like that it's up-to-date and
I had issues with the last major update. I don't like pacman as much as
apt or dnf but it does the job. Of course, you have have to use KDE
Neon, you can use any Window Manager you want.

what are you using it for? Alpine is pretty nice for tiny stuff, but you have the alternate libc and toolset (musl and BusyBox) so some things aren't 100% compatible without a little help.

wikipedia says it'll go with about 128mb of ram and ~138mb of disk space lol

obviously your minimal gui stuff will bloat that a bit

Are you specifically trying to test KDE or just want a Linux distro to play with?

Puppy Linux and Damn Small Linux are tiny and don't need many resources.

Alpine if you want something for the server side to be used with Docker, although it can be used for anything

I want to run a bbs on it. I am realizing Microsoft is a sinking ship.
Windows 11 is just as bad as windows vista.

I want something that has most of the libraries pre-installed.

Debateable, but that means Windows 12 should be awesome.

One of my favorite Linux distributions these days is Linux Mint. I've been using Linux Mint on a secondary PC since 2015 and have had very little trouble with it. I was running my BBS in a Windows VM on it for a while, but I moved my BBS to the Linux side abotu 4 years ago and it has been running great. I mostly just update the software packages every so often, and I've installed some BBS-related software on it (such as ANSI editors), but otherwise I just let it run. I also run Plex Media Server on the same PC.

Linux Mint is available in a few flavors, with different window managers: Cinnamon (which I think has the most bells & whistles), Xfce (which I had always heard is more lightweight, but not sure if that's true anymore), and MATE. I run Linux Mint Xfce edition for my BBS PC.

of coarse mint is based on Ubuntu, which is based on debian.
I really like the Ubuntu firewall ufw, easy to open or block ports.
On my game servers I start with all inbound and outbound ports closed, then I just open ports my servers actually use, I always change my SSH port and VNC ports to ports that are uncommon.

I think what I like most about Linux Mint is that it tends to just work, so it's easy to run & maintain. And it includes useful software packages.
